Hulett, the closest town, is 18 miles away on gravel road. Here – where one habitat melts into another – they work livestock in timbered canyon and rim rock country as well as in open sagebrush prairie.
About 150 years ago the first settlers, called “homesteaders”, came to the area. The small farmers were up against the rough climate, down-and-dirty cattle barons, hostile Native tribes and the depression of the early 20th century. Many gave up and left. Today the old buildings and machinery found all over the ranch bear witness of times that we only know from novels and movies.
Many of our guests at the New Haven Ranch give this fun activity a try. During our demonstration we give instructions and examples of the proper form. It’s great fun to learn as it is a true Western skill that nearly every cowboy and cowgirl can do. Throwing a lasso is not as easy as it sounds, things get a bit different if you’re actually throwing it, especially throwing it at a moving object, not to mention doing so on the back of a horse. But it’s always best to start practicing at step 1; learning to throw a rope at a stationary object while standing on your own two feet. (during the retreat we only do step 1)
Throughout the process, the client connects to a deeper reality and awareness of their responses and reactions to the world around them. In the coaching session, the horse becomes an active partner and provides feedback and mirrors the client’s behavior and emotions. Horse’s sensitivity to the client’s movement and emotions provides insights for the coach to direct the session and generate self-awareness. While interacting with a horse helps clients gain a sense of safety, allowing self-discovery in a healthy, controlled environment.
We also have two additional cabins with kitchenettes and bathrooms. A furnace and a wood stove provide warmth on cooler days. On hot days, the central air conditioning can be turned on. Bedding and towels are provided. There is the possibility to use a washer and dryer as well. During free time guests can relax, play a round of pool, sit on the balcony with a view of the Missouri Buttes or just take a walk under starry Western skies. Adventurous souls can walk down to the lake, relax in the tipi or take a paddleboat out on the New Haven Ranch lake.
A packing list will be provided to all guests coming to the retreat.
